Build Your Own Dome Home With EconOdome DIY Home Kit

For the past three decades, Illinois-based designer Wil Fidroeff has helped people build their own domed house by letting them participate in the process and making it affordable. He founded Faze Change Produx, the company that makes DIY domed houses called EconOdome. The home improvement house comes pre-cut and partially assembled with detailed instructions so it is very easy to assemble. It can be made from wood and thermoplastic polyolefin (an extremely durable and inexpensive single-ply roofing material).

Much like the average home, EconOdome homes include a foundation and the ground floor. Once this base is in place, the walls and roof will be installed. There are a total of 130 triangular roof panels that connect to form the dome, which has ten identical sides. The parts of the DIY kit are cut to fit precisely with no additional labor, minimizing waste and saving time. Assembly is very easy as the wood is also equipped with pre-drilled holes for stainless steel screws and caps.

EconOdome is available in a variety of frame kit sizes, including a fully insulated two-story, 26-foot model that costs around $ 18,000. This model is just over 800 m² and has a fully equipped kitchen on the first floor and a bedroom on the second floor. The bedroom has a toilet and an area for a home office or additional storage space. The company also offers a smaller 13-foot option for those working on a lower budget.

EconOdome’s interiors have exposed wood, and the exteriors are light gray, brown, or white. People living in a hurricane-hit area can add hurricane plates and an apex vent to ventilate air, heat, and moisture.

Fidroeff explained:

Our two most popular frame kit types are the ‘T-Beam’ frame kit with exposed wood interior and the more economical ‘Basic’ frame kit. The third type of frame kit is called “Double Dome”. A double dome frame kit can consist of two 2 × 4 Basic EconOdome frame kits (one dome in a larger dome). Or a double dome can consist of a 2 × 4 EconOdome frame for outdoors and an EconOdome frame set for indoors. EconOdome frame kits are most commonly used to build a two story house over a 10 sided perimeter wall.

These domed houses would be ideal if they included clean energy options and water usage systems. That way, people everywhere could build sustainable communities.

In 2019, small home company Arched Cabins unveiled their DIY Arched Cabin kits in a variety of sizes for just $ 1,320 for their smallest model. The kits are made in Texas and shipped nationwide – right to the site you want to build them on, with step-by-step building instructions.
