Contractor Dies After Falling Through Roof at Eastern Shipbuilding

According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, an investigation is ongoing after an out of town contractor died early Wednesday morning at Eastern Shipbuilding.

It happened just before 7:30 a.m.

BCSO Patrol MPs responded that an employee of Belfor, a construction company contracted to repair roofs, fell through a roof and died on the scene.

Investigators believe the contractor was carrying sheet metal on the roof when he stepped on a skylight and fell about 30 feet to his death.

The victim was from Orlando and was brought to Bay County to repair a roof damaged by Hurricane Michael at Eastern Shipbuilding.

He was identified as a 43-year-old Darwin Soares Jr.

“The management and staff of the Eastern Shipbuilding Group offer their condolences to the family of the person involved in the accident,” officials from the East wrote in a statement to News 13. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.”

An employee of a national civil protection company repairing Hurricane Michael damage at Eastern Shipbuilding’s Allanton Facility died this morning after a tragic accident.

The person died at the scene of a fall from the roof of the building to be repaired.

Shortly after Hurricane Michael, Eastern hired the national civil protection company to repair several buildings at its Allanton facility that were damaged by the storm. Further investigations into the accident are currently underway.

The management and employees of the Eastern Shipbuilding Group extend their condolences to the family of the person involved in the accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.
