PANAMA CITY – An out of town contractor who fell 30 feet to his death Wednesday morning at Eastern Shipbuilding has been identified as Darwin Soares, Jr., 43, of Orlando.

The Bay County Sheriff’s Office reported that Soares was an employee of the Belfor construction company and they were taken to the facility for roof repairs after Hurricane Michael. Investigators believe Soares was carrying a piece of sheet metal on a roof when he stepped on a skylight and fell about 30 feet. No foul play is suspected.

“The management and employees of the Eastern Shipbuilding Group offer their condolences to the family of the person involved in the accident,” said a statement from Eastern Shipbuilding. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.”

Since Soares’ death was related to work due to Hurricane Michael, he will likely be added to the storm-related casualty list, as well as a construction worker who fell through a roof in Marianna last month, and Liberty County Crum baseball coach Corey and his own Ms. Shana Crum was electrocuted while repairing the baseball field related to the Hurricane Michael damage.
