It took hours to extinguish the four-alarm fire.
There are concerns that the Greater New Bethel Baptist Church could be destroyed.
Firefighters charged from above and below as smoke filled the sky.
The fire broke out around 2:30 p.m.
Church staff and children were in the affiliated daycare center. Mark Neptune ran to the church, concerned for his two and a half year old.
“As I approached the flame, my heart raced a little,” said Neptune. “But I know they have a good system and keep everyone in the back room away from everything. So everyone is safe. “

Everyone made it safe when nearly 50 firefighters were called in to fight the fire.
An unusual four-alarm fire. Lt. Kirsten Miller of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said it was a difficult fire to begin with.
“It started on the roof,” she said. “To the best of my knowledge, a roof repair has just been carried out. And somehow a fire was lit on the roof. And it’s trapped between several layers of the roof and that makes it very difficult for firefighters to stop the fire. “
The crews tried to get to the flames for two hours before finally cutting holes in the roof to get to the fire. After four hours, Miami-Dade Fire had finally made it completely.
What started is unclear. But investigators are investigating Aegis Roofing, who was working on the church when the fire started.
CBS4 caught up with Aegis Roofer staff in the church. Fabian Watson informed us that general maintenance work was being carried out at this time.
“Firefighters were called. We worked. Firefighters were called. That’s it. We don’t know what’s going on. “Said Watson.
