Flexible Plastic Packaging Recycled Into Kraft Heinz Roofing Material

PITTSBURGH & CHICAGO – (BUSINESS WIRE) – The Kraft Heinz Company (Nasdaq: KHC) (“Kraft Heinz”) announced the successful completion of a pilot project to demonstrate the use of roofing panels made from recycled flexible packaging. The test was made possible by the company’s participation in the Material Recovery for the Future (MRFF), a non-profit research collaboration designed to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of collecting, sorting, baling and recycling flexible plastic packaging.

The project installed flexible post-consumer plastic roofing material at two Kraft-Heinz manufacturing facilities in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, and Holland, Michigan. The recycled roofing materials were installed at the end of 2020. The materials consisted of 4 ‘x 8’ boards; 94% of each panel was made from recycled plastic and fibers. This was an important project for Kraft Heinz as the company uses flexible plastic packaging in its product portfolio.

The pilot project is monitored for performance compared to standard building materials. If the recycled materials are as good or better than standard building materials, Kraft Heinz will strongly consider standardizing the use of this recycled material in the future. The company will report on the use of recycled content to the Association of Plastic Recyclers’ Demand Champion program after joining late last year.

“It was a privilege to be part of MRFF, which not only helped find ways to collect and recycle flexible packaging on the roadside, but also to identify end markets that we could leverage in our facilities. Our test project underscores the company’s commitment to sustainable packaging and the priority it places on its environmental, social and governance commitments. Kraft Heinz continues to look for ways to make our packaging recyclable and to include recycled content in our supply chain. “- Erik Groner (Senior Principal Packaging Engineer)

“This Kraft Heinz project is a strong example of environmental protection, in which the use of virgin material is reduced by choosing roofing materials made from recycled flexible plastic packaging. Working with recyclers, they have provided a model to meet expectations for full plastic life cycle management while using an efficient, cost-effective package for the protection of consumer products. “- Susan Graff (Vice President, Resource Recycling Systems; MRFF Research Director))
