Homestead Family in Need Gets New Roof/Nominations for Next Year

Sixto and Maria Martinez thought they would spend their golden years carefree in their own home, but their deteriorating roof changed that. With their fixed income, they could not pay to replace the roof. But thanks to a generous return to the Miami Community Campaign T & S roof systems and no roof left behind, the Martinez are now the recipients of a free new roof installed during one this weekend Installation celebration.

The roof of the Martinez House at 18561 SW 354th Terrace in Homestead is more than 20 years old. Over the years and through many hurricanes, it started to leak. The Martinez patched it up here and there, but as the roof deteriorated, homeowner insurance went up. The couple were unable to get homeowners insurance due to a higher premium for their leaking roof and without the means to replace the roof, and so they joined the “No Roof Left” campaign. Through the Centro Campesino Farmworker Center in Homestead, the family was able to raise enough awareness and voices to beat two other families in need by taking 60% of the votes home.

“We are so happy because what T&S Roofing does for us is not really easy,” said Sixto Martinez. “This new roof will give my wife and me peace of mind,” added Martinez.

“This program is important to us because it exposes us to those who need the most help in our community and allows us to pass it on to neighbors who really need a helping hand,” said Toledo.

The new roof of the Martinez is truly a neighborhood affair. Marixa Figueroa, program specialist at the Centro Campesino Farmworker Center, learned about the family and helped spread the word on behalf of the couple. She and others from the community joined the Martinez to see the demolition and installation of the roof begin and to partake in a paella by Chef Gio of Chef Gio Enterprises.

“The Martinez have their own homes and are an integral part of the community, but like other aging, steady-income adults, a major repair or bill can set a family back,” Figueroa said. “I think the program is great!” she ended.

“Financially, my parents couldn’t replace their aging roof,” said the couple’s son, Sixto Martinez Jr. “Nobody has ever given us anything like this, and we’re so grateful for the generosity of T&S Roofing,” he added added his mother Maria.

The No Roof Left Behind program is unique in that it aims to help communities rally around a needy family through the use of social media by simply signing up at https://noroofleftbehind.com/program/fl/1188 and cast a vote.
