Merchants Capital Provides $10 Million Loan for Affordable and Supportive Housing Benefiting Survivors of Domestic Violence

CARMEL, IN – Merchants Capital, an Indiana-headquartered mortgage company, has donated $ 10 million to build Haven Homes, an affordable and supportive 52-unit community coming to Plainfield, Indiana.

Haven Homes is an apartment complex that is considered affordable for everyone. Anyone or family looking to rent an apartment can do so at an affordable price. Through the partnership between borrower RealAmerica Companies and Sheltering Wings, a nonprofit that provides emergency shelter to survivors fleeing abuse, 25% of affordable housing units will be provided for project-based vouchers specifically for domestic violence survivors. In addition, all residents have access to support services at the community resource center and clubhouse, with mental health services provided by Cummins Behavioral Health Systems, Inc. and domestic abuse support provided by Sheltering Wings.

In addition to serving Sheltering Wings past and present residents, the apartment complex and community provides affordable housing to all Hendricks County families in need of it. Those who work in and around Plainfield can live and thrive in the supportive residential community and collectively make positive social and economic contributions.

“Where you call home determines so many things in your life. Not only does this project reinforce Sheltering Wings’ dedicated mission, it shares the importance of affordable housing, especially in fast growing areas like Plainfield, ”said Brian Shelbourne, vice president of Merchants Capital, Originations. “Merchants Capital was honored to partner with RealAmerica Companies and Sheltering Wings to bring this project to life. Together, we’re shedding light on these issues and providing safe, high-quality, affordable housing where everyone, including domestic violence survivors, can thrive and grow. ”

When domestic violence survivors are safe enough to exit Sheltering Wings, affordable housing opportunity becomes a great need for them. According to the Sheltering Wings website, “the financial burden of having a roof over your head – not to mention the cost of vehicles, childcare and education – can be a major barrier between a determined survivor and continued independence.”

“Studies continue to show that affordable housing, reliable transportation, affordable childcare and access to mental health services are among the major barriers to developing stability and independence,” said Cassie Mecklenburg, Executive Director of Sheltering Wings. “With Haven Homes we can help families in several of these areas, and we are not taking this opportunity lightly. We want to be advocates for families in order to create security, thrive, and build self-sufficiency. It is an honor to work with other like-minded organizations that care for our families and the community. “

As Cummins Behavioral Health Systems, Inc. manages the mental health services for those who request and need them, Sheltering Wings will share the common room to build their life skills programs, conduct case management, share prevention and education programs, and administer health services and support the children and domestic violence survivors.

“We are honored to work with the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority (IHCDA) and the City of Plainfield to provide affordable housing to families who work in the community,” said Ronda Weybright, president and owner of RealAmerica. “By partnering with Sheltering Wings and Cummins Behavioral Health, we can provide on-site services that promote stability and independence so families can thrive while living in beautiful and affordable surroundings.”

“The City of Plainfield is delighted that Plainfield has been chosen as the home for the Haven Homes project for many reasons. City workers have been working to diversify our housing market for some time, ”said Andrew Klinger, Town Manager for the City of Plainfield. “This development will have a huge impact on our economy as it is in the heart of our warehouse and retail district and offers immediate access to public transportation. The units in this development will enable employees who work here to live here too. “

Construction work for Haven Homes has already begun, with the aim of fully completing development by fall 2021. Click here to see the latest groundbreaking ceremony for the project.
