National Engineering Firm Announces New CEO

The board of directors of McKim & Creed, Inc., a 600-strong engineering and geomatics company with offices in the United States, announced today that Steven W. Smith, PE, has been appointed as the company’s next chief executive officer, effective May 1 has been. John T. Lucey, Jr., PE, CEO of McKim & Creed since 2014, will continue to serve as chairman of the board.

He is a civil engineer who worked his way up through the ranks of his first professional employer, who became president of his company. His background includes a thorough understanding of the key technical and geomatic services offered by McKim & Creed, as well as the experience of running and growing a professional, employee-owned service company. Steve’s passion will help McKim & Creed continue our fantastic growth trajectory while driving key initiatives such as diversity and inclusion, safety and professional development, ”said Lucey in the announcement.

Mr. Smith began his engineering career with Chas in 1985. H. Sells, Inc., a New York-based transportation and geomatics company. From 1999 to 2007 he was President / CEO of the company and coordinated its growth in seven countries. In late 2007 the company was bought by WSP and Mr. Smith became President of the Transportation Business of WSP USA.

In 2015, Mr. Smith moved to the UK and became Head of Highways & Bridges at WSP UK’s 7,500-strong company. In this role he managed the integration of WSP UK and the newly acquired Parsons Brinckerhoff business into one cohesive unit. In 2017, Mr. Smith was promoted to General Manager of the Transport & Infrastructure business of WSP UK and its 3,000 employees. During his six-year tenure, he was also a sponsor of the WSP UK Executive Committee, sponsoring Security (2016) and Diversity & Inclusion (2018-2020) across the company.

Mr. Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from SUNY in Buffalo and an MBA from the University of Connecticut.
