New Cost-Efficient Commercial Hot Water Heater

So far, fossil fuels have been the only real, economically viable option for hot water on a commercial scale in the northern United States. For plants that have switched their power generation to a renewable, sustainable source, this means a permanent dependence on fossil fuels just to heat water. As an electric heat pump, Aegis can get energy from the same renewable source as other building systems.

Aegis heat pumps are available in air and water source models and are powered by R744, which is commonly referred to as refrigerant grade CO2. This is non-toxic, non-flammable, has a zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and a low global warming potential (GWP) of one. This compares to other refrigerants such as R134a and R410a with a GWP of 1,430 and 2,088 respectively. Maximum efficiency is achieved because the Aegis heat pump’s water heater simply absorbs and dissipates heat from the environment, so that no additional heat has to be generated. Depending on the model, air or water is drawn into the pump and its heat is absorbed by the CO2. cool air or water is then sucked out. The refrigerant is pumped through a compressor, which increases its temperature. At the same time, cool water is circulated upwards from the tank and extracts heat from the heated CO2 in the condenser coil.

The new heat pump technology with CO2 enables the use of electric heat pumps at temperatures below zero and at the same time offers comparable total operating costs compared to natural gas (even at historically low natural gas prices). Aegis produces hot water up to 185 ° C with outside air temperatures down to -4 ° F with Aegis A (air source) or spring water temperatures up to + 14 ° F with Aegis W (water source) without the need for additional heat. This makes these heat pump water heaters highly efficient for optimal energy savings and lower operating costs in a wide variety of new and retrofitted commercial facilities.

In fact, Aegis uses about half the electricity compared to an electric resistance water heater. It has a high coefficient of performance (COP) averaging 3.0 to 5.0 all year round. With the Aegis A air source heat pump, a cool recovery option is available that can produce cold and hot water at the same time to further increase COP.

An extended electric coil defrost cycle is available with the Aegis A air source model. This function makes reverse operation for defrosting superfluous. Aegis W, the water heater with water heat pump, can use spring water from a cooling system, which leads to a further increase in the performance of both household and cooling systems.
