New VA center tops out in Kernersville | Local News

Downtown Kernersville is a four story building that rises on 40 acres off Kernersville Medical Parkway. It is being built by Florida-based Lend Lease Healthcare Development LLC and leased to the VA for 20 years.

The center will serve many of the same veterans now treated at the community-based outpatient clinic in Winston-Salem, but it will continue to have an opportunity to expand services in the future, VA officials said.

The center will offer services such as cardiac cath lab and dialysis that are not currently offered here. About 30,000 veterans will be offered enhanced primary outpatient care and specialty services at the new center, officials said.

Joe Farrell of Lend Lease said the building should be closed until Thanksgiving for interior work to proceed. Farrell said the construction will create 400 to 500 jobs for those working on various phases of the project through to completion.

Lend Lease officials said the building will use natural light to encourage healing and a connection with nature. It will have a “green roof” that will allow veterans to use the outside space to socialize between appointments. The center will provide both primary and mental health care with clinics that include dental, diagnostic, laboratory, cardiology, pulmonary, audiology, ophthalmology, pathology, radiology, and pharmaceutical clinics.
