Otterly adorable! Virginia Zoo in Norfolk welcomes two new otters

NORFOLK, VA. – The Virginia Zoo welcomed two otterly adorable otters to their park last month.

Puba and Alana are Asian clawed otters and joined the zoo’s species survival plan as social companions in February.

Alana is an otter and was born at Columbus Zoo in October 2018. The male otter Puba was born at the Miami Zoo in September 2007.

Zookeepers said Alana was shy, very smart, food motivated, and seemed to enjoy swimming by the waterfall. Puba is sociable, vocal, energetic and seems to enjoy swimming deep at the bottom of the pool.

The two completed quarantine and wellness exams before being introduced to each other. They are shown at the Asia Trail of the Tiger exhibition.

According to a press release, Alana and Puba officially made their debut at the exhibition in late February.

“The two are getting used to their new living space and will soon be introduced to their other exhibition colleagues, the white-cheeked Gibbons Dexter and Asia, when the temperatures are consistently warmer,” the press release said.
