MIAMI (CBSMiami) – This year, 90 new vehicles were awarded a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick + by the Road Safety Insurance Institute (64 years ago).
IIHS President David Harkey said more vehicles got the grade due to automatic braking systems and better headlights.

“Automakers continue to improve their headlights, and our headlight tests continue to do well by adding more light to the road for the driver and removing that glare for the oncoming drivers.” Said Harkey.
The IIHS has not yet tested the Genesis GV80, which Tiger Woods crashed near Los Angeles on Tuesday. The luxury SUV has modern safety functions, including several airbags.
Two more Genesis vehicles were tested and awarded top prices. The G70 performed well in the roof strength test, which authorities say is critical in rollover accidents like Woods’.
Genesis is part of the Hyundai Motor Group, which also includes KIA. Together, the company received 17 awards, most of them from any automaker.

Mitsubishi was the only manufacturer that did not receive a single award.
General Motors only earned two for the Cadillac XT6 and the Chevy Equinox.
Harkey said, “For the huge number of vehicles they make and the models they make, we only had a few winners for them, so we want them to improve their game.”
Last year no pickups won an award, but this year one – the Ram 1500 Crew Cab.
The IIHS continues to test new models as soon as they are released.
