Repair work being done to popular Dania Beach Pier

BEACH DISHES, Fla. – Steps are being taken at Dania Beach Pier to protect the popular structure.

In addition to fences and signage, a piece of wood has been added to support old and decaying pillars until permanent repairs can be made.

According to the city of Dania Beach, these repairs will be completed in the coming weeks.

Long-time pier visitor Rich Engels noticed the damage and reached out to Local 10 News after trying to reach someone with town but getting no response.

“I noticed that one of the pillars had cracks and exposed rebar,” he said.

Local 10 News reached out to the city and received a long statement in response, which can be read below:

“As part of the city-wide safety assessment of the city’s facilities and structures, significant work on our popular fishing pier and the adjacent facilities has already been completed over the past 18 months. This included replacing several hundred wooden deck planks, dozens of linear feet of the pier railing, as well as roof soffits, lighting, and electrical repairs and improvements. In recent months, we have paid particular attention to the structural components of our various systems. To this end, the repair of the support column of the bait shop, which is part of the pier / restaurant structure on the beach, is to begin in the coming days. On the basis of visual inspections and discussions with shipbuilding specialists who examined the column on site, we were verbally assured that the condition of the column is not critical in everyday life. However, caution is recommended to repair the column in the coming weeks. We have commissioned the services of a contractor for ship constructions, who will begin with the construction for the demanding surface repairs of the “pile jacket” in the next few days. The two and a half meter high sheathing completely restores the structural integrity of the column and provides the necessary support for up to two decades. The individual parts and consumables have been ordered and, depending on the delivery (which is accelerated), the actual work on the column begins within seven to 10 days. The work is expected to take two to three weeks. This repair is expected to be completed in four to five weeks. Fernando Rodriguez, Director of Public Services | City of Dania Beach ”

Signage and fences were installed below the pier last week. A full repair is expected before September.

His welcome news for Engles.

“Without Channel 10, probably nothing would have happened because no one ever replied to me,” he said.
