The 11 trusses of the roof can be opened in about 15 minutes. Each truss weighs 330 tons, and the entire project took about eight months from start to finish.
The roof is one of the final improvements to the site, which has undergone significant renovations over the past half decade. Last year, Court Simonne Mathieu was unveiled, a beautiful, medium-sized show court located in the Jardin des serres d’auteuil greenhouse in a far eastern corner of the site.
This year, the fabled bullring, officially called Court 1, was to give way to a garden full of statues to make room for pedestrians to gather and enjoy the games on a video screen.
The tournament is slated to run from September 20th to October 4th, but many top players and officials are skeptical that it will actually take place as coronavirus numbers hit 5 million worldwide this week and continue to grow.
