Snow & ice accumulation on roofing, gutters

ELMIRA, NY (WETM) – Snow and ice have been something the Twin Tiers have gotten used to this winter season. Unfortunately we’re not quite done with the cold stuff yet.

There is still a lot of snow and ice on the ground, and that extra weight can put you and your property at risk. Ice build-up on your gutters can destroy them and cost you a lot of money in damage. Icicles can develop on your gutters and roofs and become quite large over time. If they fall, they can seriously injure an adult and potentially kill pets or children.

18 News reached out to Jeremy Hoover, General Manager at Just In Time Roofing and Gutters, to learn what the damage could be like and how best to prevent it. “Ice that builds up on the eaves of the roof can actually damage the eaves, allowing ice and water to collect under the shingles and damage the decking surface below.” He said that as a preventive measure, you could build a heated pipe in your gutter to prevent ice and snow from forming.

On the subject of snow on your roof, Jeremy told us that if your roof has a slight slope, then you should rake some of the snow off the roof as the extra weight is bad for your structure. Using a pull-out rake, available at most hardware stores, is the safest way to remove snow.

First, make sure your home is well insulated to prevent ice and snow buildup on your roof and gutter system. Poor insulation causes heat to escape and ice to build up on the roof. Make sure your roof is well ventilated from the evening before to the top.

Do not try to melt ice or snow on your roof or gutter with heat. This is a serious fire hazard and can lead to much bigger problems.
