Sunrun Brings Home Solar & Batteries to Miami

I know – how was the largest solar installer in the US not already in Miami, the largest city in the Sunshine State? Well it wasn’t, but it is now.

Florida’s rooftop solar market has been pretty limited for years, especially when compared to markets like California, Hawaii, and New Jersey (yes … New Jersey). Why? Well, we have a full report that explains why. In short, the utility companies and the regulators and politicians they control did not want to give homeowners much opportunity to benefit from the sun’s free energy. They prefer to keep the winnings to themselves.

As the market opened up a little more and the prices for solar energy on the roof kept falling, companies like Sunrun found their way into the land of flamingos, alligators, mosquitoes and Disney World. Sunrun arrived in Florida in 2017 and it actually took so long (4 years!) To cross the Florida scrub to Miami. I’ll let Sunrun explain its expansion across Florida in my own words:

Launched in Florida in 2017, Sunrun provides solar energy and batteries to residents of the Duke, Tampa Electric, and Orlando Utility Commission service areas. The company expanded its services to other parts of Orlando and Tampa in the Florida Power & Light service area in May 2020. Now, more Floridians in the greater Miami area – including Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties – can access reliable, clean power with Sunrun’s Brightbox residential solar and battery systems from just $ zero and at a consistently low monthly rate. “

Aside from the usual job of storing solar-generated electricity for later use in the evening, the Brightbox storage system can also help keep a home running when another Florida specialty – a strong hurricane – goes out of power.

Don’t have a line of cash or credit for a solar roof and battery? Sunrun also offers solar as a service. Pay a monthly fee. Get Solar. $ 0 down.

In addition, the Sunrun service offer includes round-the-clock monitoring, insurance and a “guarantee for the service life of the panels”.

“Miami attracts people from all over the world for its sunny skies, and it will also be one of the hardest hit cities in the country to be affected by climate change,” said Lynn Jurich, Co-Founder and CEO of Sunrun. “We are delighted that we can now offer the Miami Brightbox employees rechargeable solar battery systems to keep lights and other critical devices on when the grid fails.”

Jason Nordendale, Sunrun’s Regional Sales Manager, added, “Solar employs more than 12,000 people in Florida and the state is the second largest solar employer in the country after California.”

Sunrun’s new home base for the South Florida region is Ft. Lauderdale.

What about the price? Good question. You have to ask Sunrun. The last time I looked at the general numbers it seemed like Tesla rooftop solar PV was cheaper, but things can change and homes and regions vary. As I’ve recommended for a decade, it’s best to get at least a few quotes from solar installers to see what price, fit, and feel will work best for you.
