Tensotherm Roof Helps Revitalize Jones Beach Boardwalk Café

Birdair, Inc. recently helped restore the legacy of the original Jones Beach Boardwalk Café with its signature Tensotherm ™ roof system. The converted cafe in the Central Mall of Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh, NY features a double polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) insulated pull-roof construction that creates a dramatic interior while highlighting the building from afar along the beach.

The 1,800 square meter, conical roof, which is visually reminiscent of waves and sails, is supported by a flying mast and cables to enable a column-free space underneath. The site also includes four connected PTFE draft roofs over a splash guard for children and adults to enjoy in hot weather.

“It was an honor for our company to participate in the revitalization of the Jones Beach Boardwalk Café,” said Hikaru Konno, President of Birdair. “Our Tensotherm ™ roof was the perfect design solution for rebuilding this historic structure. The café is a great facility for the hundreds of thousands of beach goers every year. “

The new café on the promenade replaces the original building, which was a popular destination for the community before it tragically burned down in a fire in 1964. The new, single-story building features a palette of stones and bricks similar to the original 1930s building and houses concessions, play areas, a kitchen, restrooms, storage areas, and vendor offices.

Beyer Blinder Belle Architects, Arup, Scalamandre Construction, and The LiRo Group also helped develop and build the $ 20 million project.

Tensotherm ™ is a composite system consisting of a PTFE glass fiber membrane outer skin, a thin, translucent insulating cover embedded in airgel and a thinner and lighter sound or vapor barrier inner lining. The advantages of Tensotherm ™ include diffuse glare-free daylight, improved temperature control, remarkable acoustics and innovative sustainability.
