Tesla Solar Roof 15kW installation completed in 4 days: Time-lapse video

A video recently published by Weddle and Sons Roofing showed how fast a 4,000 square meter space is. The roof (approx. 372 m²) could be replaced by solar roof tiles from Tesla Energy. The roofing company installed a large 15 kW Tesla solar roof system in a house in Topeka, Kansas. The entire installation, including PV tiles, glass tiles and moldings, took a total of four days.

On the Friday prior to Weddle and Sons Roofings installing Tesla Solar Roof, the existing roof and drying with double-layer Firestone underlay was torn off the house. According to the roofer, tearing down the existing roof only seemed to take a day.

The 15 kW Tesla solar roof installation covers an area of 4,000 m². (approx. 372 square meters) seemed to take only five days, including the demolition of the old roof. For comparison: The installation of a new roof usually takes several days, depending on the material used.

According to amconstruct.com, the estimated time for roof installations is as follows:

  • Wood shingles – 3 – 4 days
  • Slate tiles and shingles – 6 – 7 days
  • Asphalt shingles – 1 – 2 days
  • Concrete tiles and shingles – 8-9 days

Elon Musk announced the release of Tesla Solar Roof Version 3 during the EV automaker’s 2019 Q3 earnings call. Tesla increased production of its solar roof at Gigafactory New York as soon as version 3 was ready.

The installation for the latest version of solar roof accelerated steadily earlier this year before COVID broke out. In February, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that the company plans to move ahead with solar roof installation in the United States.

Along with the announcement, Musk included a link to the Tesla solar roofing team’s page, which subtly invited people to apply for the company’s roofer, plumber, and electrician vacancies. Musk has stated in the past that Tesla needs more workers (i.e., roofers, plumbers, and electricians) to push the installation of solar roofs.

COVID ultimately halted some progress by Tesla Energy in the production and installation of Solar Roof V3. However, Elon Musk and the rest of the Tesla team were still confident that the solar roof installation could be put back into operation despite the pandemic.

I’m looking forward to international expansion this year 😀

“And internally, we want at least 1,000 solar roof installation teams to work with – and take a week or maybe a little less than a week to install, which gives you 1,000 roof installations per week. We see the demand well. The production is good. So it’s really just about the installation, “said Elon Musk during the call for results for the first quarter of 2020.

The CEO also spoke about the increasing global demand for Solar Roof. In February 2020, before the outbreak of the pandemic, he alluded to the international expansion of Tesla solar roof systems by the end of the year.

“And then, as I said, you are also expanding the training, the very diverse group of companies in the roofing industry, to also install solar roofs, which in my opinion are scalable – enable us to scale well over 1,000 per week. We are also seeing great interest outside of North America. We therefore expect this to be a product that is international and that actually attracts enormous interest from China in the solar roof. So we’re confident that over time this will be a very important product for the company, ”said Musk.
