OGDEN, Utah – A woman used social media to raise money for an elderly veteran who took a delivery job to pay for repairs to his home.
On November 15, Jen Cantwell Weiss shared a video with a delivery person who was struggling to climb the steps of her house to drop off groceries.
“I only saw this video after he was gone, otherwise I would have gone out to help him,” wrote Weiss on Facebook.
A relative of the man saw the video on social media and put Weiss in touch with the delivery driver.
After a brief introduction, Weiss learned that Larry was a veteran who had a stroke earlier this year and had to learn to walk again.
Weiss shared Larry’s story on Facebook, saying he took the delivery order to pay for repairs to his roof and asked people to help him with the cost.
Weiss published his Venmo information and the donations came in.
“I’ve been in contact with him and he’s overwhelmed with gratitude,” she wrote on Facebook. “He did NOT ask for help, but I love that people are touched by his story and want to help ease his burden a little.”
Larry said the donations covered his roof repairs and he no longer needs to make deliveries.
Weiss posted an update on Facebook saying Larry and his wife had asked that you stop donating for him, but for Toys for Tots or your local grocery bank. He says he received more than enough and that there are so many others out there who need the help more than he does. He thanks him from the bottom of his heart for everything people have sent. ”
